The South Road EP Review

Borja Cobada Releases a Rich and Dense EP Entitled The South Road

In an industry where electronic music is more widely used than instrumental, the musicians who can do it well are few and far between. Borja Cabada, however, is truly an amazing exception. In an attempt to illustrate stories and bring them to life for his listeners, the singer/songwriter delivers intricate tales through his lyrics and melodies in his latest project The South Road.

From the Top

The South Road starts with an upbeat, yet mellow instrumental that eases the audience into the EP. The very first words set the entire tone of the extended play “I hear they say we cannot fly,” which is Borja’s own personal call to action. The artist proceeds to convey his message with poetry over crafted beats . Sophisticated listeners may be dismissive about the simple introduction, but it does not belie the multilayered tracks that are to come.

Multilayered Tracks

Each song seems to resemble the previous one: there seems to be only subtle variations in the notes or tones in the music, but Borja surprises the listeners by occasionally floating a riff or chord topped with poetry. Listening to the work I’m able to trace a possible influence to Gil Scott Heron’s “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised.” Just like with Heron, listener’s are treated to subtly complex music interwoven with poetry that’s honest and straight from Borja’s heart.

However, this is where the The South Road could use some work. Borja’s flow of vocals often gets lost in the density of the music. Better production or recording could help highlight a vocal track that sometimes sounds like a knot of words slyly tucked into an inaudible sequence.  In a fair shake to the EP I found myself reading every lyric to each song. Generally I was impressed with the lyrics, but there were times when they dipped into a depth of intellectual bedrock that was hard to digest on a read through let alone a listen.

Overall the The South Road is an exploration of music and poetry that wends, at times, into some dense and intimidating measures. It would be exciting to see how some added production value, especially for the vocal track, might improve the EP. Appoet looks forward to listening to more of The South Road in the future.
